Virginia Stephen (later Woolf) taught at Morley between 1905 and 1907, taking in a range of subjects including, history of art, history, English composition and poetry appreciation.

This Penny Lecture introduces and explores the only record Woolf made of her experiences of Morley - an unpublished sketch held in her literary archive. In this 'Morley Sketch' Woolf rehearses her early ideas and anxieties about gender, class and professionalism, themes that are also central to her first novel The Voyage Out (1915), which this lecture will touch on too.

Clara Jones is a Lecturer in Modern Literature at King's College London and the author of a book on Woolf's politics called Virginia Woolf: Ambivalent Activist (2016).
