In 1979, to recognize the 25th anniversary of the Fender Stratocaster, Fender released a special commemorative edition model of the guitar.

* An initial run of approximately 500 guitars was made, finished in a general white finish with the word "Anniversary" on the upper horn of the guitar.
* The white finish originally used, however, was water-based. This made it extremely unstable and subject to cracking and flaking - in a BIG way.
* Of that original run of 500 guitars, virtually every single unit was found to have severe finish cracks and checking in a very short time after production. Many guitars had paint checks peel and curl right off the wood. The water-based paint proved to be serious mistake!
* Fender offered all who purchased those earliest the guitars the option to have the guitar re-finished in Porsche's silver automotive paint. Many took them up on the offer, so a huge number of those early white-painted releases are gone forever, refinished and assimilated into the general population as Porsche-silver Anniversary Strats! \
