The Sholes & Glidden typewriter commonly referred as an "S&G". The S&G is generally accepted as the first commercially successful typewriter and was introduced late in 1873, and most collectors accept 1874 as the first year of introduction. This typewriter paint is fully restored, and has been tested. It does have the ribbon, but it is dried out. All keys are original and are all fully responsive. The space bar also has a patented stamp along with other small stamps, that are a bit too small, and blurry to make out. The inside part of the wood has the serial number stamp which reads. A1101. This machine has an "A" serial number prefix, around 1875, which indicates it was one of the early machines refurbished at the factory and one of the common procedures of the time was to dip strip the machine and repaint it. When they did that they did not replace the original hand painted decorations but simply added some pinstripping over the newly painted black machine. There are very small signs of pitting at the top of this machine.
